DNS Settings in Windows®
Do you want to know about the the DNS settings in Windows based PCs? Learn how you can change these settings.
DNS or Domain Name Service is the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) standard name service which is present in the Windows operated computers. This utility enables the user to register the domain names by the client computers in the network. The settings in the DNS can change the URL provided by the users or at the browser to the IP address of the specified website. So, the DNS can be viewed as a database on the system. The DNS can be accessed on a Windows based computer through the Control panel, administrative tools option. DNS can be also considered as the backbone of the active directory. The information about the domain controllers of the servers and the active directory is stored dynamically in the DNS by the servers. So, the DNS set up should be correct to solve the issues like the replication of the domain controllers.
Discussed below are some ways to change the DNS settings and tips to resolve issues if any:
- Change by specifying the DNS
- By mapping the IP addresses
- Tips to solve the issues
Change by specifying the DNS
The method to specify the DNS tells the system about the DNS to be used while browsing the Internet. In default cases, the option is set as automatic and the Internet Service Providers provide the DNS. The users can select the DNS that is preferable for them and can also be able to make a DNS of their own. For doing the settings, the user should access the network connection. Now select the properties option and choose the TCP/IP properties. Now click the ‘Use the following DNS server addresses’ option in the Internet Protocol window. Then enter the name of the DNS server in the space provided. Click 'OK' and exit the process. Choose the 'Advanced tab' option to add more DNS servers.
By mapping the IP addresses
The method of mapping the IP addresses may not change the main preferences of the DNS. The user can change the settings for the individual domains only. Navigate to the following file location and open the file in a notepad:. At the end of the file, the user can type the IP address and domain of their wish. Most probably the last part of the file would be the local host entry. Save the file and close the window.
The making of a DNS by the user should be recommended only if the user is able to do so. The user should know the IP address of the domain or the DNS while changing the DNS settings. The user can obtain the same from the Internet Service Providers. The user can perform the mapping of the IP address when the access to the DNS fails. The browser always checks the domain for the above file before using the normal default DNS server. If the user is not specifying the domain name there, then the normal domain will be used. The settings can be corrupted due to the infections upon the system or due to any other malfunctions like the system errors. So the user should keep the system error free in order to be able to open websites.
