Windows® Advanced File Sharing
What is advanced file sharing in Windows? How to enable it?
File sharing on Windows operating system allows the user to copy a file from one computer to another using a network connection. We can say that file sharing allows access to the content of the directories through the network. However, file sharing may lead to several security problems because it gives the right to the other user to access a part of your system hard drive. In order to resolve the security issues, Windows operating system also provides advanced file sharing. This feature can be enjoyed only in XP and higher versions of Windows. Using this feature, we can give permission to the users to share the folders. We can give each user the permission to either take full control or partial control in reading the files. In order to use advanced file sharing feature, you need to disable simple file sharing and need to set-up necessary user accounts.
Some tips to enable advanced file sharing feature in a Windows operating system are given below:
- Disable Simple File Sharing
- Creating User Accounts
- Enabling Permission
Disable Simple File Sharing
To set-up advanced file sharing, you need to disable simple file sharing feature on your Windows operating system. In order to disable this feature, select ‘Start’ and click on ‘Control Panel’. Then select ‘Folder option’. Now a new window will open and click on ‘View’ tab. Under ‘Advanced Settings’ area, uncheck the 'Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)' checkbox. Click ‘OK’ after changing the settings.
Creating User Accounts
Before sharing the files and folders using the advanced file sharing feature, you need to set-up or create user accounts necessary for sharing. To create user accounts, open the ‘Control Panel’ from the ‘Start’ menu. Then select ‘Create a new account’ and then a new window will open. Enter the name in the textbox under ‘Type a name for the new account’. Then click on ‘Create Account’.
Now, we can utilize the advanced file sharing feature of Windows operating system. To share the folder with advanced features, right-click on the folder you want to share and select ‘Sharing and Security’. Then click the checkbox ‘Share this folder’ and enter the name of the share in the ‘Share Name’ box. Then click the ‘Permission’ and edit the name of the users who have access to share. By using the advanced file sharing feature, we can give each user or the group either full control of the share or just read the files.
