Autorun Registry in Windows®
What is Autorun registry feature in Windows Operating Systems?
Windows Autorun is used for automatically opening or launching of the disks which are being inserted into the DVD and CD drive of the system. This would also be used for other type of removable storage devices like USB, flash drives and the memory cads. This is a feature found in the Windows Operating System. Users need a file called autorun.inf file to use Autorun. This is found with the root directory of the CD-ROM and also the USB device. This has lot of commands and they would all get executed when the media gets inserted to the system. This feature may cause issues, also since it would cause the spreading of the malware. The most important registry entries that would find with this Autorun is the NoDriveTypeAutoRun and NoDriveAutoRun which are found in both the per-machine and per-user settings.
Below given points explain about the registry entries in the Windows Autorun:
- Changing registry settings
This type of registry entry has got the capability to enable and disable the Autorun feature that is present on all the drive. For registry entry, the valid data present would range from 0x00 to 0xFF. In this case, the default value is the 0x95 or 0x91 and this would depend on the version of Windows. It is seen that valid data would be from 0x00 to 0xFF.The entry which is present in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE would over ride the entry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Data in the entry is the bitmapped value, When ant bit corresponds is set to 1, the Autorun corresponds to that drive would be disabled.
This type of registry entry would enable or remove the Autorun feature in your system which is available on the individual drive. This is not being related with Group Policy and would not exist by default. If there is no entry, the value of data would be 0. Entry present on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE would override the HKEY_CURRENT_USER. In the whole 32-bit data, the lower 26 would represent the drive letters starts from A to Z. In this case, the data range would from 0x0 to 0x03FFFFFF. For an example, if the data value is 0x8, the Autorun is disabled on the D drive.
It is seen that the registry settings could be varied by using the command line reg.exe utility or the GUI regedit tool. In a text file, these registry settings might be placed and then name with .reg extension. Whenever you double click that file, those settings which are present in the file enter to the registry. The registry settings could also be changed from Group Policy. You need to restart the system to take effect of this registry changes.
