System Failure and Error Recovery in Windows®
Describe the reasons for system failure and their solutions.
Windows is one of the common Operating Systems used throughout the world. Its three major versions are Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. System failure is a common problem associated with every Operating System of Windows. It causes sudden crashing of the system and can cause loss of data and ongoing transactions. The Windows error can occur because of improper use and management of the system functions and utilities. Improper shutdown during previous use can cause problems in the rebooting of the operating system. Installation of new software which is malicious and tries to modify the settings of the system files or tries to modify the kernel of the Operating System can cause the Operating system to fail. Installation of new hardware which has compatibility problems with the Windows Operating System can cause trouble in the booting process. In the case of incompatible hardware that has been recently added to the system, removing or disconnecting it can solve the problem of Windows failure. As with other cases, Windows recovery has to be used. Configuration of the error recovery can be done by performing the actions mentioned below. First write the required action in the system log. Then alert all the administrators of the system and set up a file for the advanced user to debug. Then the computer has to be restarted and in most cases, the modification would be incorporated. Only the administrator can perform the above actions.
Methods to address system failure are:
- Use last-known stable configuration
- Use boot disc
- Automatic restart disabling
Use last-known stable configuration
The best method is to restore to the last known stable configuration of the Windows Operating System. It can be done by booting in the safe mode and selecting the last known good configuration. Press 'F8' immediately after the computer restarts. Then select the last-known good configuration.
Use boot disc
The Windows original installation disc can be used as the next option for addressing the Windows system failure. Insert the disc immediately after starting the system and select 'check system' option. After the restarting of the system, select 'System restore' to restore to the last restored state.
Automatic restart is the option used by the Windows Operating System to restart whenever there is a problem in its functioning. This has to be disabled to solve the problem without restarting the system, which can cause loss of the settings and it can worsen the situation as well.
