Benefits of Creating partitions with Microsoft® Windows® Format FAT32
What is Windows Format Fat32?
The file system manages the files stored in your hard drive. It also organizes the files in the hard drive and thus optimizes the system. Each file system organizes the hard drive files according to some pattern, which may be different in other file system. There are some tasks, which is common to all file systems. It must efficiently use hard drive space to store all the files. Moreover, the file system must have a catalog of files stored in the hard drive so that data retrieval is fast and easy. The basic tasks like delete, copy, move and rename must be done comfortably by the file system. Another job of file system is to provide a data structure that permits computer to boot off the file system. FAT32 file system was released with little change to Windows architecture so that compatibility may be at best for the file system. Here 4 bytes are required for cluster size. Microsoft Windows OS have good compatibility with FAT32 file system.
The information about FAT32 file system and comparison with NTFS file system is discussed below:
- Features of FAT32 File System
- Comparison of FAT32 and NTFS File System
The FAT32 was released to overcome the size limit of FAT16. This has maximum drive size of 8 TiB with 32 KiB clusters. FAT 32 was first introduced with Windows 95 edition. The maximum file size in a FAT32 volume is 4 GB-1 byte. In this cluster, values are stored in 32-bit field in which 28 bits are used to store cluster number.
Features of FAT32 File System
FAT32 File System is flexible file system because root folder in it is an ordinary cluster chain and can be located anywhere on the drive. Next feature is its efficiency. It can use 10 to 15% more efficiently than other file system. FAT32 can support up to 2 TB size. FAT32 drives include a backup copy of critical data structures, which is helpful in disk failure.
First is the Security comparison between FAT32 and NTFS. NTFS sets security level for an individual files as to which users can access the file whereas the FAT32 lacks this. NTFS can compress files. The compatibility is the main advantage of FAT32 over NTFS. FAT32 is compatible with most operating systems like Windows 95, 98, Mac and Linux Operating System. FAT32 is far superior to FAT12 and FAT16.
