Fix Windows® Genuine Error
Why are you getting Windows Genuine error?
As you log on to the Windows system, you could be getting the Windows Activation window with an error message “Windows is not genuine”. You could be getting the desktop background in black color and the error message “This Copy of Windows is not genuine” could be coming in the bottom corner of the desktop. You could be getting the error message, “You must activate today. Activate Windows now” as you view the 'System Properties'. The error message could be coming as a result of many reasons. There could be a lack of permissions in the registry key 'HKUS-1-5-20'. You could have applied the Plug and Play Group Policy object in the system. Another reason behind the error message may be that the Network Service account has full control and read permissions over the 'HKUS-1-5-20' registry key.
Here are some steps to fix Windows Genuine error:
- Edit permissions of Group Policy
- Disable Plug and Play Policy
- Set the default registry permissions
Edit permissions of Group Policy
You could edit permissions of Group Policy to fix the error message. For this, you need to open the open the Group Policy 'Settings' in your system at first. Next step is to click the 'Edit Security' button and click the 'Advanced' button. You could then get the 'Advanced Security Settings for Plug and Play' window and you need to click the 'Add' button to add the 'Service' account. You need to select the permissions like Query Template, Interrogate, Read Permissions and Query Status etc in the 'Allow' section and then click the 'OK' button to allow these permissions. After applying these permissions to your Group Policy Settings, the next step is to run the gpupdate/force. The final step is to verify if apt permissions are applied to the group policy using the 'sc sdshow plugplay' command.
Disable Plug and Play Policy
The next method to fix the Windows Genuine error is to disable the Plug and Play Policy of the system. First step in this method to determine the source of policy. This could be done with typing 'rsop.msc' command in the 'Run' command to run the 'Resultant Set of Policy' wizard. Then, you need to visit the 'System Service' location in the 'Security Settings' of the system. If Plug and Play service has been configured via Group Policy settings, you could be able to see which group policy has been applying in the setting. Here, you could disable the Group Policy settings and force the settings to be reapplied to disable the Plug and Play Policy
If you could not get any Group Policy Objects, then it is possible that any other activity has been changed from the default registry permissions. For this, you need to start the 'Registry Editor' in your system at first. In the 'Registry Editor', you need to right-click the registry key 'HKEY_USERSS-1-5-20' and then select 'Permissions' button. If you get the "Network Service not present" message, then you need to add it in the system with the help of 'Add' button. Then, restart the system after selecting the 'Network Service' and 'Grant Full Control' and 'Read Permissions'. You could then get an activation request and you need to complete the activation process to resolve the issue.
