Learn why Windows® keeps rebooting at startup
What causes the issue of continuous rebooting of Windows at startup? How can this problem be fixed?
A computer that continuously reboots can have a number of issues. Viruses and malware can cause the computer to reboot repeatedly, but hardware failure or power issues can also be the root of the trouble. There are several ways to approach the troubleshooting process of this issue. You can run antivirus and anti-spyware software on your PC, and run other utilities such as a disk defragmentation program. But if the problem still occurs, then you must check your Windows Registry for corruption as the next step. This is because if Windows keeps rebooting itself unexpectedly during system startup, it could be the result of a Windows Registry problem.
Tips for solving continuous rebooting issues in Windows Operating System are given below:
- Eliminate hardware issues
- Get rid of software issues
- Solve power issues
Eliminate hardware issues
Hardware failure can cause a continuous reboot cycle in your PC. So, eliminate the most common causes first from your system. You must replace memory chips one at a time to discard a bad stick of RAM. If the memory checks out, boot from the Windows CD and access the system recovery. You shall also run chkdsk /R at the command prompt to check for problems with the hard drive. Then try removing any optional cards that were added to the computer recently (such as a sound or network card). This is because sometimes a newly added device could be the cause.
Get rid of software issues
In order to get rid of software issues, press the F8 key while the system is starting up to access the advanced start-up options. Then select the 'Last Known Good Configuration', and press Enter. If that does not work press F8 again, and select 'Safe Mode', and then disable the option to automatically restart Windows after system errors by right-clicking on the My Computer icon and selecting 'Properties'. After that on the 'Advanced' tab, click the 'Settings' button under 'Startup and Recovery' and clear the check box labeled 'Automatically restart'. This will allow you to restart the PC without getting trapped in the reboot cycle. Also ensure that your antivirus and antispyware software is up-to-date, and perform complete scans for any malware infections. You can also try removing any newly installed software that may be incompatible with Windows, and update drivers for your hardware devices.
Power issues can be a problem, too, that may cause continuous reboot. First try to replace the power cord to the computer, replace the power strip it is plugged in to, and try it in a different outlet. If that does not help, try a new power supply. Be sure to purchase one with enough power for your system. Use a high-performance power supply for a gaming system or a low-performance power supply for a usual workstation.
